The War Within

Patriot at the River is the latest release by Jayna Baas, and it caught my attention partly because of the setting. Her hero, Benjamin Woodbridge, is a Patriot in the South, and if you know anything about the Southern Campaign, you'll know that it was bitter. Neighbor fought against neighbor, and Banastre Tarleton's cavalry gave no quarter when it was asked. He was henceforth called "Bloody Ban."

Benjamin Woodbridge fights a war both within and without. The British are trying to arm the Cherokees against the militia, and at every turn we feel the angst of a man's loss --loss of his home and father. Note: this is the second in a series. You can read it as a stand alone, but I suggest reading Preacher on the Run first.

Jayna gives the reader great glimpses of this war. I soaked up the battle at Hannah's Cowpens in particular. Great prose, and what was even better was the struggle within. If you like the movie The Patriot, this is like a Christian version, and I'm thankful the writer does not hold back on the theological conflicts of the day--she explains things accurately and well!

Highly recommended!
